JCC’s Center for Community Studies Project Wins SUNY Community Relations Award

Jefferson Community College is pleased to announce The Center for Community Studies project for the Workforce Investment Board of Jefferson and Lewis Counties has received a State University of New York Council for University Affairs and Development (SUNY/CUAD) Award of Excellence.

The project, entitled “A New Workforce for a New Century,” received the Judges’ Citation in the Community Relations category of the annual awards program. Out of all entries in the category, judges awarded one Best of Category and one Judges’ Citation. To be considered, nominees demonstrated how the institution worked with the community to identify and correct a problem or increased awareness of a situation and the overall effect of the program or project.

In January 2004, the Center for Community Studies was commissioned by the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Jefferson and Lewis Counties to develop the first-ever strategic plan for workforce development in the region. This strategic plan was intended to produce long-term workforce development and economic growth for Jefferson and Lewis Counties in Northern New York. The secondary and primary data developed in the effort would also be used to support the development of a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for Jefferson County, as well as support a variety of other public planning and policy efforts. The comprehensive project report, including key data-driven recommendations, was completed in August of 2004 and presented to the community in conjunction with a local workforce summit held in October 2004.

Gregory Gardner, WIB Project Director and Associate Professor of Business at Jefferson and Denise Young, Director of the Center for Community Studies, will receive the award on June 17 during the SUNY/CUAD Annual Educational Conference at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, New York.

Copies of “A New Workforce for a New Century” are available by calling the Center for Community Studies at 786-2489 or by contacting Martin DelSignore, Director of the Workforce Investment Board, at 782-9252.

Judging for the awards was coordinated by colleagues at 16 SUNY institutions and winners were determined by a jury with professional experience in institutional advancement. SUNY/CUAD represents all professionals employed in a cross-section of institutional advancement areas at every State University campus, including publications and web page maintenance to alumni relations, marketing and development.
